Adult Education opportunities at First Parish are plentiful. A Spiritual Practices Group is available to all; we share ways to keep ourselves open to God’s presence in our hectic and scattered lives. This group is for anyone who wants to strengthen their relationship with God and with each other; it begins with scripture and prayer, followed by discussion of various spiritual practices, and ends with a quiet time of meditation or journaling. Women's Spirituality is also offered; this group explores ways to slow down and find small miracles in our everyday lives, and includes sharing conversation and new ideas with other women. A Women's Retreat is held in the fall; women of our church community gather to share and spend time together spiritually.
Walks with God is a program that includes an annual historical walk through a New England community to study historical figures and the locations (e.g. homes, gravesites, churches, etc) for which they were best known. Participants hear 10 minute presentations given by volunteers who represent "the spirit of" an historical person. The program examines the religious understandings, innovations, and stances taken by key figures during times of extraordinary change. During the years the "Walk with God" education program has operated we have toured 10 New England towns and the country of Germany, examining the lives of people of faith and their continuing influence on our way of life. Soup and Conversation is held after worship several times a year. This program includes fabulous soups, a stimulating presentation, and some great conversation. In the past some of the topics covered were; Women in the Church, Contemporary Innovations in the Church, A Journey through Tombstones, and What Rome Thought of Christians. |
