Dear First Parish Church,
As we step into the new year, our hearts and spirits are drawn to the warmth and peace that the winter season brings. The Danish word Hygge (pronounced “hoo-gah”) is often associated with creating a sense of coziness and contentment, whether through quiet moments with loved ones, the soft glow of candlelight, or a warm cup of tea on a chilly day.
Hygge is about appreciating the simple joys and fostering a feeling of togetherness and well-being. It invites us to slow down, breathe, and find sacred moments of comfort amidst the busyness of life. It is a perfect theme to carry into the quieter days of January, after all the holiday hubbub.
A Time to Reflect and Reconnect
As winter settles in and we experience the stillness of the season, let us take time to reflect on our spiritual lives. Just as we need physical rest, our souls also require moments of quiet contemplation. Hygge encourages us to embrace moments of solitude where we can listen for God’s still, small voice in the quiet. I invite you to take time this month to create a cozy space for yourself—perhaps a candlelit prayer time, a favorite hymn, or a peaceful walk in God and with one another.
Worship in the New Year
In January we remember the story of Jesus’ early life and ministry. On January 5th we will celebrate the Epiphany, marking the visit of the Magi to the Christ Child. Then, on January 12th we will remember Jesus’ baptism, and our own. Through the end of January and beginning of February we will turn to the teachings of the early church found in 1 Corinthians, to hear important wisdom about spiritual gifts, unity in Christ and a life grounded in love.
As we embark on this journey of the new year, may we find peace and joy in the simple things—together with God, our church family, and each other. Let us open our hearts to the divine peace that surpasses all understanding and embrace the Hygge of the season.
Blessings of peace and warmth,
Rev. Katherine
